Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learned by example that art could be a vehicle for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her life, but was able to spend summers with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a young student. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the trash of one of members of juries. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at the studio that was small. In 1999, she established her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
